Post 60 Newsletter

 Commander’s Message,  Larry Cerne

April has been a very busy month for the Post. The Auxiliary had its Annual Essay Awards Program, which was a great success. Our Teacher of the Year Awards Dinner will be held on Monday, April 30th.

We’re looking forward to new and better things in the Lounge. You’ll just have to come down and see what improvements are being made.

April was Children and Youth Month and we have been sending donations to the following organizations: $1060 Relay for Life; $1060 American Legion Children’s Miracle Network; $1660 American Legion Southern Maryland District Youth Camp; $1560 National Emergency Fund; $260 Chesapeake-Potomac Spina Bifida Assn; $260 to five Area High Schools for “After Prom Nights”; $1560 each toFisher House for disabled veterans at Andrews AFB and Bethesda Naval Hospital and $2060 to The American Legion Program “Heroes to Hometowns”. These donations are in addition to donations to Laurel Police, Fire Department, Rescue Squad, the Maryland Special Olympics Bay Plunge and smaller gifts to other charitable organizations and individuals. Our cash donations for the year so far, amount to about $25,000.00.

Nominations for the 2007-2008 post year are in and the elections are on May 17th. We ask that you come to the post between 12 Noon and 7:15PM to cast your ballot for your next year’s officers.

On May 5th we will be having our first Crab Feast with music by Sweetwater.

Come down and get your pickin’ fingers in shape for the upcoming crab season.

 For God and Country

A Lot is Happening at Unit 60!

By Anselma Obremski

Your Unit has been very active for the past two months working to improve our community relations with both the City and the Post. In March, we served our famous Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner on St. Patrick’s Day to 94 hungry members and guests.

In April, we presented our Annual Essay Awards presentation. We had 5th and 6th grade students from two Elementary Schools take part. Laurel Elementary had 60 students participate and Bond Mill Elementary had 30 students. We would like to congratulate the 1st place winner Jarrell Harris from Bond Mill Elementary. He will being going on to represent us at the State contest.

Don’t forget our Unit 60 elections on May 8th. The following persons have been nominated for next year’s officers:

President -  Anselma Obremski, Vice President – Janice Null, Secretary – Linda Stover, Treasurer – Freda Cerne, Chaplain – Angie Dixon, Color Bearer – Vickie Kunde, Sgt at Arms – (Vacant)

Please come out and show your support. We still need a lot of volunteers.
